Choosing a rug · Ramezani

How to choose the right rug size.

Start with the space the rug will occupy, then compare the measurements of the actual pieces. Handmade and older rugs need not match a standard shop size. A range of lengths and widths often gives you a more useful shortlist than one exact measurement.

Measure a minimum and a maximum

  1. Set out the furniture first. Mark the rug outline with paper or a floor-safe temporary marker, and walk around it before measuring.
  2. Measure the outline in centimetres in both directions. Note the smallest rug that works with the furniture and the largest that leaves the clearance you need.
  3. Write down four numbers: minimum length, maximum length, minimum width and maximum width. Include door swings, hearths and other fixed obstacles in your check.
  4. Compare each shortlisted rug's recorded dimensions with that outline. Confirm unclear measurements, fringe inclusion, thickness and underlay needs with the showroom.

Check the layout room by room

Living room

Mark out the seating area with the sofa and chairs in their usual positions. Compare a layout with the front legs on the rug with one that accommodates more of the furniture. Measure the arrangement you prefer, leaving the walking routes you need around it.

Dining room

Measure the table, then pull each chair out as you would when sitting down. Mark the space needed for the chair legs to remain on the rug. Test the arrangement at both ends of an extending table if you use it open; the table dimensions alone will not tell you the rug size.

Bedroom

Decide whether you want one rug beneath the bed or separate pieces alongside it. Mark the areas where you step out of bed and check bedside furniture, drawers and door openings. Measure the usable space in the layout you actually intend to keep.

Hallway or runner

Measure the narrowest usable width and the length between doorways or obstacles. Check that doors can open over the rug and any underlay. A runner's catalogue dimensions do not describe its thickness, so ask about clearance before choosing a piece.

Turn your measurements into a shortlist

Choose a collection, then select Choose size and filters. On a phone, open the Filter panel. Enter the four bounds under Approximate size (cm); leave a box empty if you do not need that limit. Your collection choice stays selected while you adjust the dimensions.

For example, if your layout allows a rug 240–300 cm long and 170–200 cm wide, use those as the minimum and maximum values. These are example measurements, not a recommended size for every room. You can change them in the filters.

Try the example size range

Centimetres are the recorded measurements used by the filters. Feet and inches shown alongside them are approximate conversions. One metre is 100 cm; one inch is 2.54 cm. Use the centimetre figures when checking a close fit.

These are catalogue browsing groups, not room recommendations. Check both measurements on the individual rug page. A runner can also appear in a length-based group.

Bring your measurements and rug numbers

Note the rug numbers you like and bring a room photograph or floor plan when you visit our Wembley showroom. Seeing a shortlisted rug unrolled helps you judge its scale and pattern. Call +44 20 8903 9039 to discuss the pieces and any measurements you need confirmed. The showroom is open Mon–Fri 9:30–17:30 · Weekends by appointment.
